Aromatic plants of Malaysian Herbal Heritage

Assalamualaikum and very good evening. Today, I’m back with new topic of Malaysia Herbal Heritage which is “Aromatic Plants For Personal Care”.

Aromatic plants are a source of fragrances, flavours and essential oils. They have long been recognized for their healing, cleansing, relaxing and therapeutic properties. Traditionally, aromatic plants are used in medical many medicinal herbal preparation which employ either fresh plant parts or dried forms. Nowdays, there is growing interest from costumers in having all these natural ingredient in their personal-care products. Almost 200 different chemical elements are contained in each of the aromatic plants. Each chemical component present in the essential oils has its own properties which thus are responsible for the various therapeutic actions for beauty and personal care use.


Lengkuas

Alpinia galanga, locally known as lengkuas, is a robust and perennial herb, up to 3.5 m in height. This Zingiberaceae family plant also known as galanga and greater galangal. It has rhizomes, 2 to 4 cm in diameter, that are hard, fibrous, shiny, nad light red or pale yellow and have a strong pungent taste.

The leaves are alternate, glossy green and densely white-dotted.

The inflorescence is terminal and erect with many flowers which are fragrant. The fruit is a globose to ellipsoidal capsule.

Range area
It can be found throughout South and Southeast Asia, from India to Japan, southward to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Australia. This plants is also cultivated and semi-wild near villages in all tropical Asian and Southeast Asia countries and in China and Suriname. It grows under tropical climate condition which is sunny or partially shaded area.

Parts used
The plant parts are used are rhizome and leaves.

Rhizome
Ø Used as as expectorant for Bronchitis, stomachic after childbirth, convulsion, carminate, stimulant, anti flatulence, laxative and anthelmintic
Ø Help to treat skin diseases, colic dysentery, cholera, chronic malaria, diarrhea, contusions and toothache.
Ø Applied externally for rheumatism

Decoction of leaves
Ø Used for anti-rheumatic and stimulant baths





Laxative-Tending to stimulate or facilitate evacuation of the bowels
